What Is Vibe Coding? A Plain-English Guide for Small Business Owners

Vibe coding is building software by describing what you want in plain English, and letting an AI write all the code. You do not need to know Python, JavaScript, or any other programming language. You describe a problem — and the AI produces a working app.

The term sounds like tech jargon, but the idea is straightforward: small business owners can now build their own tools — CRMs, client portals, booking systems, internal dashboards — without hiring a developer or paying for a one-size-fits-all SaaS subscription.

Where did the term come from?

Vibe coding was coined by Andrej Karpathy, a prominent AI researcher and former Director of AI at Tesla, in a post published in February 2025. He described a new way of building software where the developer mostly describes their intentions in natural language and lets AI write, test and iterate on the code.

Within months the term had spread far beyond the developer community. By mid-2026, small business owners with no technical background were using it to build tools that would previously have required thousands of pounds in development costs.

How vibe coding works in practice

Here is what the process looks like in plain terms:

  1. You describe what you want. In plain English, you tell the AI tool what problem you are trying to solve. For example: "I need a simple CRM where I can log new leads, record what stage they're at, and add notes from each conversation. It should email me when a new lead is added."
  2. The AI builds it. A tool like Lovable takes your description and generates a fully functional web application — database, interface, logic and all — usually within two to five minutes.
  3. You review and refine. You look at what was built, use it, and give feedback in plain English: "Move the notes section to the right column", "Add a filter to show only leads at the proposal stage", "The button is the wrong colour." The AI updates the app.
  4. You deploy and use it. Lovable and Replit handle hosting — you get a web link you can open from any device and share with your team.

No configuration files. No command-line terminals. No deployment pipelines. Just a conversation and a working tool.

What vibe coding actually produces

When you describe an app to a vibe coding tool, it produces real code — typically HTML, CSS and JavaScript for the interface, plus a backend and database. You can inspect that code, export it, host it yourself, or hand it to a developer to extend.

This is different from a drag-and-drop website builder, which produces a proprietary format you cannot take elsewhere. With vibe coding, you own the output.

Is vibe coding right for your business?

The honest answer is: it depends on the problem. Vibe coding is well suited to small business owners who:

  • Have a specific operational problem they want to solve with a custom tool
  • Are paying for a SaaS subscription they only use a fraction of
  • Want to automate a repetitive admin task without involving a developer
  • Are comfortable spending time iterating on something before it is perfect

It is less suited to businesses that need:

  • A complex, high-traffic consumer-facing application
